Early Roots: The Foundation of a Remarkable Life
Born in 1951 in the serene town of Nyarusiza in Kisoro District, Gabriel Hatega was the son of Francis and Sophia Munyangeyo. From an early age, he exhibited extraordinary determination and resilience, walking long distances to attend Kisoro Primary School. He later joined Kigezi College Butobere, where his hard work and dedication stood out. Gabriel studied at Uganda College of Commerce, Nakawa (now Makerere Business School), becoming an accountant. During his school years, he met Mary, the love of his life, who would later become his wife and lifelong partner. Together, they were blessed with five children and two adorable grandchildren.
A Life of Service: Leadership, Wisdom, and Community
Gabriel began a distinguished career at Unilever Uganda Limited, where he dedicated 31 years. Starting as a Company Accountant in 1973, he rose to Chief Accountant and Company Secretary, eventually becoming Executive Director, Country Manager, and Vice Chairman. His work took him to the UK and Kenya, where he served as Human Resources Director. Gabriel also took several international courses in leadership, financial management, and supply chain management. After retiring from Unilever, he joined the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), serving as Executive Director for five phenomenal years
A Legacy of Excellence: Gabriel's Distinguished Career
A proud member of the Rotary Club of Kampala since 1984, Gabriel earned the Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition for his dedication, especially as a Polio Officer. He served on various boards, including Ugachick, Rural Electrification Agency, and the Uganda Manufacturers Association, where he contributed over 10 years of expertise. Gabriel was intellectually curious, sophisticated, and deeply appreciative of life’s finer things yet humble. Above all, he was a source of wisdom, inspiration, and love to his family and all who knew him.
